5 THINGS TO DO IF YOU'RE NOT TRAVELING THIS SUMMER

If you had to cancel your summer travel plans, don't despair. Consider these fun staycation activities.

  1. Take a virtual tour. You can now experience art, history or nature without ever leaving the comfort of your couch. Google Arts & Culture and other museums and galleries are offing a variety of free virtual tours. You can spend an afternoon wandering through the collections of the British Museum or have a ranger virtually guide you through a national park. You can even enjoy live views of animal antics through webcams available on most zoo websites.
  2. Watch a live performance. Live entertainment may be on a hiatus, but you can still enjoy cultural experiences from home. Spend a night watching a free performance from the Metropolitan Opera or live stream one of Shakespeare's plays through Shakespeare's Globe theater. A botanical garden in Seattle is even streaming blooming plants for a relaxing viewing experience.
  3. Try a new recipe. Challenge yourself with a new recipe, whether it's something exotic you can't pronounce or a treat you've been wanting to try. Get the whole family involved in the preparation and enjoy taste-testing each dish together.
  4. Start a family hobby. Now might be a great time to get your kids or grandkids invested in a new hobby or activity. Try making a pinata at home or learn some new dance moves together. Consider starting a family reading hour where each person curls up with a good book or someone reads a story aloud to everyone.
  5. Get inspired. Just because you're staying home this summer doesn't mean you can't look forward to your next trip. Start planning your future vacation or watch a documentary about a new destination. Do your research now so that you can have a safe and enjoyable experience when you travel next.
